Nurses As Sex Symbols...why?

Nurses have always been depicted as sexy women coming into patients' rooms to give them a sponge bath wearing tight-fitting outfits, and high heels. What is your image of a nurse? And do you feel a man being a nurse is as sexy as a woman who is a nurse? Do you think your career in life is sexy (example, fireman, police officer)?

I am a nurse of almost 30 yrs and have often been victim of sexual remarksno matter how professional I act.

I think we can thank the porn industry in part for this, and a bit of human nature.

I think the idea of being cared for, and "cared" for kind of go hand in hand in fantasy. Nurses for the most part walk in at your most vulnerable, take your life in their hands, and do their best to keep you safe, and see you get well.

I have to say, even my most attractive patients, have the same "hospital" smell that definitely eliminates me from wanting to put on my "naughty nurse" outfit! LOL!

I also think the image will continue to be a stigma as long as there are Halloween costumes and "sexification" of the role in media. I do believe that patients are able to separate out the fantasy and the reality when they are in the hospital, and to date I have only had one true "letcherous" guy that I had to have a chaperone with. And I am NOT a buxom blonde with a 23" waist!

Nursing is an attitude, and its image is propagated through the actions of its members. I just try to keep professional, and expect the respect I deserve...

I have the highest respect for doctors and nurses, I truly do. I think it goes along, like you said, like with policeman and firemen. I think the nurse aspect is because nurses are caregivers, sometimes even lifesavers, and will be more (non-sexually) intimately involved with a patient's care. I'm sure you've heard, probably even experienced, patients falling in love with their nurses. That's probably one of the reasons.

I think many professional jobs fit the "sexy" roles, and I don't think it's a matter of disrespect. For example, teachers, lawyers, secretaries, policemen, firemen, even the infamous "pool guy". ;)

I'm with Tyger on this. Lots of professional jobs have that "sexy" stereotype attached. It's not a bad thing at all. The other half of the equation is that just because nurses, teachers, pool guys and firefighters are thought of as sex symbols, they definitely need the bodies to go with the "role". I worked at a hospital for many years and there were plenty of nurses there that definitely didn't fit the sex symbol stereotype. It's what's inside those scrubs that makes for the sexy nurse stereotype. You, obviously, have the body to perpetuate the idea of nurse as sex symbol. Embrace it. All that having been said, working with nurses all those years, it seemed to me that nurses tend to have rather high libido's. Again, not a bad thing at all...

Of course, the days of nurses wearing the white dresses and stockings is long, long gone. So, the naughty nurse outfits are pure fantasy these days. That having been said, I worked with quite a few nurses who made a set of scrubs look pretty damned sexy!

As a society we have sexualized some professions,,nurses, firefighters, doctors, police, flight attendants, teachers, and more. Most of the time I think it is for the fantasy aspect. Are any of theses professions truly sexy? Some stereotypes exist for a reason, some don't. As for nurses being sex symbols, well I don't know.,for me the fantasy is great. The reality is they have difficult and important jobs.

Most of my encounters with nurses have been when someone was undergoing or recovering from surgery, or popping out babies, or when getting poked and probed myself. The nurses would be running around and hustling doing their jobs, and dealing with some pretty icky stuff. Between the discomfort if I'm the victim, er, uh, patient, or the anxiety that something might go terribly wrong if someone else is the patient, sexiness of the nurses is about the last thing on my mind.

Can't say that I think of any profession in particular as being sexy.

As far as my own profession being sexy, no one thinks engineers are sexy. But we do have our fair share of terminology with possible sexual connotations: rod, shaft, pump, suction, excite, peak, vibrate, insert, stiff, male and female connectors, nipple, jam nut, . . .

I agree with Tyger and MDeb I too have respect for any one in the medical field its a very noble profession, and having a ex that is a nurse I know of the mental and physical aspects associated with it. However I will say that in my opinion any woman in any profession is as sexy as she wants to be, its all in the way they present themselves and carry themselves, just remember you are beautiful and sexy in your own way. :) :) :) :)
