It's no longer the DPT that we remember, but yes, pertussis is one of the immunizations that is "routinely" given. There are more and more parents electing not to immunize their children, but this protection wanes over time, and everyone needs a booster as an adult. Rather than the usual tetanus vaccine that is given, one should receive a one time dose of Tdap. The two most common ways pertussis is being spread--aside from parents not immunizing their children--is from adults who no longer have immunity, and those who come from other countries where immunizations are not required. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I have cared for several infants who have died from pertussis--babies too young to receive their shots. This is why the rest of us HAVE to get our shots!!!
