Members GirlNextDoor
I was recently checking out reviews of a toy and read a few sites that said something about the material in jelly vibes and dildos being potentially hazardous to your health (toxic)! Please tell me it isn't so!!
Members Mikayla1
Ok, the answer to your question is Yes and NO.What toxin you are probably referring to is phthalate - this is used to soften the rubber or PVC in jelly toys. The toxin CAN, but does not always leach (leak) out of the toy and get into your system. The fact is, it takes quite a bit of phthalate to cause a toxic issue and most toy companies are careful to use only a small amount to get the job done. So, how do you find out if your toy contains this element? Well, you really can't. However, there is a clue that sometimes can help. If you take your toy out of the box and notice a really, really strong odor that does not go away with washing or a little air time - this can be an indication. OR, if you notice that your toy turns colors, gets smudgy looking - this could also be an indicator. Mostly, the cheap, cheap, cheap toys are the culprits. How do you protect yourself? You can place a condom over your toy. This prevents the phthalates from intermixing with your fluids. Always throw away your toys after their shelf life - yes, toys have a shelf life, particularly jelly toys. Jelly toys should NEVER be kept longer than 6 months if you use it alot or 12 months for regular use. WHY? Well, jelly toys are porous (they contain small holes) and these holes can release the phthalates after time or even harbor bacteria.Choose higher quality toy materials - cyberskin, silicone (100%), glass - these are the best materials as long as you are caring for them appropriately. Glass toys are the most hygenic followed by silicone. The problem? These toys are stiffer and more expensive. However, if you have serious concerns, buy the higher end toys! The truth of the matter is that there is risks with almost any intimate product if you fail to wash and store your toys properly. Bacteria can and will give you serious problems worse than these toxins if you fail to properly wash your toys. The moral of the story - know what you are buying, care for what you are buying, never use a toy with cracks or bleeds and ALWAYS think safe when you are thinking sex.I hope that helps!Mikayla
