OK, if you are unfamiliar with Candida Royalle, let me clue you in. She was a famous adult film star during the late 70's and early 80's. She abandoned the spotlight for a space behind the camera. She directs some of the most "woman friendly" adult features around - that is, if you think like a "traditional" woman. Femme is her debut film - and it has won countless awards and accalades.

I have seen a few of her features and I have got to confess, this is NOT my favorite. This film was made in 1984 - and everything about it screams 80's! From the hair styles - both on their heads and on their pubic areas - really is an idication of the time this film was made. I am a big fan of implants (or naturally large breasts) and shaven privates (especially on women) and this film does not have that - everyone is au'natural - to simply state it.

Now, this film is made up of little scenarios that are representative of a woman's greatest sexual fantasy - having sex with a rock star, a hot soap star comes to life in your bedroom, a woman takes on two men she meets in an art gallery - these are all very common fantasies. So, what makes Candida Royalle's portrayal of these scenes different? Well, for one the men and the women stay dressed for more than 5 minutes. In one scene, a man is undressing and I found myself yelling "take it off already" at the screen. This does appeal to many women because one of the biggest complaints with adult features is that the actors go from clothed to naked in 2 seconds flat without a reason! Even the woman in the same scene keeps her panties on for half the scene - where else do the WOMEN stay clothed that long? Candida does give the viewer a reason to fantasize about what the actors and acresses are doing naked.

Another signature characteristic is the way the actors interact. They kiss and kiss and kiss and fondle and really seem to connect. THe women perform blowjobs and the men oral - but it is not a marathon like in many porns - it is more "real time." Also, the men do not wear condoms and there is NO money shot - it appears as though they are actually cumming in the woman - which is supposedly a big taboo in adult films! For many women this realistic approach is EXTREMELY appealing.

Now, one thing that is notably absent from the film is sounds - no grunting and groaning. Most of the time there is some subtle - non pornish - music playing. Not the typical "bow chicka bow wow" that many older porns have. WHen the actors are nearing climax you can hear a slight bit of their pleasure utterances but not much. For many women, this is appealing also. Women sometimes get turned off by the vulgar "'F' me now" talk that is in many contemporary adult flicks!

So, if I am a woman, why is this not too appealing to me? Well, I think I like my adult features in a way that is closer to how a man would like it. I prefer fake boobs, shaven snatches, a lot of dirty talk, more oral and less kissing. I guess for me, I get turned on by the women and men - not so much the acting. However, this is an EXCELLENT film to begin with for a shy or timid woman watcher. I can see how it would definitely be appealing to some - but like all film, not all. So, if you know of a woman who would find this type of film appealing - I recommend it, but if you like the more traditional "porn" movies - then pick another film- this will not fit your bill or fill your pants!

I am not a big fan of porn videos in general, and I have to admit that one the major reasons is that I simply can't understand why the male actors pull out of the girl when they cum. I mean, how often does that happen in real life???

Now, there are adult films out there that are directed by women (like Joone, and companies like Digital Playground)and catered FOR a woman's taste. I would suggest something like that for all the women out there that like to watch porn, but want something a little different. I reviewed one, called Island Fantasy 4, which was directed BY a woman, and I truly found it to be one of the best I've seen so far!

I don't know whether it has to do with the bitter reviews, but I can't help having some concerns about Candida Royalle's name.

in Latin, Candida is a fungus that causes e.g. vulvovaginal and oropharyngeal yeast infections. Now, imagine when that gets royal proportions, as her name implies.
