This way her future husband will never have to know about any prior experiences. And before anyone hops on the band wagon of "this is another example of how women are liars" it's often forced on the woman by her parents/family. Members mystofpric Posted January 15, 2009 Members Report Share Posted January 15, 2009 I read an article about that too..... jeeze!My AP Lit teacher in high school was of middle eastern descent so one of the novels we read was from that part of teh world and it follows a woman who is raped, then beaten by her father for getting raped (she was only like 14 or 15 at the time) then force to have this painful and dangerous surgery, finally married off to be raped constantly by her husband and beaten we she miscarried and then abandoned as he went off to war (there was a civil war going on but the book barely went into that as she was unaware, too consumed by the troubles of her own life. It's insane, a fair number of women who have this surgery die(d) from complications. I'm not even sure if this is still a common practice. I agree that the idea of the hymen is the only way to prove virginity is a bunch of bull, but it's not our society that is forcing the surgery. From what I understand it's most common in middle eastern countries, especially Islamic countries that still do not allow unsupervised mingling of the sexes. Unfortunately this is still a common practice and we can sit here and preach all we want but it will take time for their customs to change, if they do at all. Forcing our own beliefs on them won't do anything but slow teh process.But here's a hypothetical. A lot of times a girl's parents will force the issue or even some girls will have it done because they have been made to believe that this the only way to be before being married. When society actually can come to a point and understand that it really doesn't matter one way or another, we might all be better off. Guys get scared about women lying about their sexual past, so they like how the hymen/tightness myth gives their ego some validation.It's not that easy to convince people to forget about marrying a virgin, when it has such a tremendous importance in their culture. I've met a lot of Indian men born and brought up in the states that adamantly want a virgin bride, when they're not one. It's just a tradition that is hard to let go of.
